Including family members: how it works, how to finance it

When the employee briefing mentions „your family can join too", the room pays attention. Family inclusion is one of the strongest satisfaction boosters – and structured well, it costs the company almost nothing.

Two structures

With most insurers, family members – spouse, partner, children – join either as an extension of the company package or in a discounted family scheme. The extension follows the colleague’s tier; the family scheme may differ in contents. Family members' entry is also typically without individual health underwriting – though this does not mean full coverage of pre-existing conditions: the terms typically prescribe a separate rule (exclusion, limitation or waiting period) for conditions that already existed before cover began, and the details vary by insurer.

Who should pay?

The standard, cleanest solution: the employee bears the family premium share, typically via payroll deduction – they decide, the company merely provides the option. Employer funding is possible too, but note: the family share is typically not a recognised corporate tax cost (details in the CIT article).

What it means in practice

What to watch at launch

State clearly at the briefing what colleagues get by right and what is optional and self-funded. Blurring the two is the most common source of disappointment. Align the payroll-deduction process with payroll in advance – with a good template, that too is routine. Common employee questions: our employee FAQ.
