How group health insurance works in Hungary – in plain language

Group health insurance in one sentence: with a single contract, the company gives its team access to private healthcare, and employees see specialists, get lab tests and diagnostics without waiting lists. Here is how the construction works – no jargon, the way we would explain it to a managing director over coffee.

Who contracts it, and who is insured?

The contracting party is always the company; the insured are the employees – typically from as few as 2 persons, with entry rules varying by insurer. The group arrangement typically operates without individual medical underwriting; for smaller groups, however, and for higher-tier covers (inpatient, surgical), insurers may request a health declaration and may apply an entry age limit, a waiting period, or an exclusion for pre-existing conditions – it is worth checking this separately for every offer. That is why colleagues who would struggle to get individual cover can be included.

What does a package contain?

The core is outpatient specialist care: consultations, laboratory tests, diagnostics – with phone-booked appointments. Higher tiers add imaging (MRI, CT), annual screening programmes, physiotherapy, dental budgets, inpatient and surgical cover, and second medical opinions. Important: contents depend on the chosen tier – there are four typical tiers on the market, and separate tiers can be set for executives, middle management and staff.

How does an employee use it?

In practice the colleague calls the care coordinator on a dedicated number, and an appointment is booked at one of the insurer’s partner clinics. In network-based packages the insured typically pays nothing on the spot – settlement happens between insurer and clinic, up to the limit set in the terms and alongside any applicable deductible. Reimbursement-based elements allow free choice of doctor: the colleague sees their usual specialist and the insurer refunds the invoice afterwards.

What does it cost, and how is it taxed?

Premiums start from a few thousand forints per person per month; the exact figure depends on headcount, age profile and contents. Taxation – under a genuine group contract with an undivided premium, where the part of the premium attributable to one insured person cannot be determined even by apportionment – is notably favourable: as a specific defined benefit the total public burden is 33.04%, borne solely by the company – the employee pays no tax or contributions. We cover this in detail in our taxation article.

Where does the independent broker come in?

Nine health insurers offer group schemes, with significantly different contents, networks and fine print. As an independent broker we run all of them in competition and hand over the offers in one clear table – so the decision is a single meeting, not nine PDFs. After signing you can still ask us: templates for roster changes, a review of the index letter if you let us know before the renewal date, and, if a claim gets stuck, help with the insurer where we can.
