For international companies with Hungarian subsidiaries, group health insurance is one of the most tax-efficient employee benefits available – yet the mechanics are rarely explained clearly in English. Here is the full picture, based on the insurers’ official tax publications and 2026 rates.
What does it cost the company for an employee to receive HUF 100,000 worth of benefit? As salary – grossed up so the employee’s net pay is unchanged – the total cost is HUF 169,925. As group insurance: HUF 133,040. The burden ratio: 33.04% versus roughly 69.92% – more than a 20% saving per person, at any budget level. (The HUF 100,000 is an illustrative value for the tax mechanics, not a package price.)
The Hungarian Tax Authority’s guidance of 14 May 2020 distinguishes three cases. Individual policies – even under a so-called collective umbrella – are taxed according to the legal relationship, i.e. as salary. Group savings-type insurance is treated the same way, because the per-person savings premium can be clearly determined. Group risk insurance – which is what group health insurance is – is typically taxed as a specific defined benefit, provided the arrangement is genuinely group-based and the per-person premium cannot be attributed to individual employees even by apportionment; otherwise the premium is taxable as employment-relationship (salary) income.
If employees decide individually whether to join, or individually select packages, the arrangement may be reclassified as individual insurance – taxed as salary at nearly 70%. The favourable 33.04% belongs to a genuine group contract with an undivided premium, in which the part of the premium attributable to one insured person cannot be determined even by apportionment – the group form under the Civil Code (Ptk.) is not enough on its own. Structuring the contract correctly is not a formality; it is the key to the tax advantage, and we help with it.
