This is one of the most common – and most personal – questions at every employee briefing. The answer is fundamentally good news, but it must be stated precisely, because the details differ significantly.
With group contracts there is typically no health declaration, no questionnaire, no medical exam: the team joins as a group, administratively. This means a colleague who would be declined for individual insurance due to a chronic condition – or accepted only with exclusions and surcharges – still gets cover.
For the outpatient services at the core of packages – specialists, labs, diagnostics – a pre-existing condition is usually not an exclusion: colleagues can use the care for their existing complaints. An employee managing hypertension can see a cardiologist under the package.
For inpatient, surgical and certain high-value covers, insurers may apply waiting periods and exclusions – these vary significantly by insurer, and this is one of the most important fine-print differences on the market. Some apply longer waiting periods to existing conditions; others use itemised exclusions. Our comparison table flags this in a dedicated row.
Two honest sentences: „you can use outpatient care for your existing complaints" and „inpatient and surgical elements may carry waiting periods – see your one-page summary for details". Trust depends on saying both. More Q&A in our briefing playbook.
