„And if a colleague falls ill abroad?" – a fair question at every company where people travel. The answer emerges in a triangle of three cover types, and the most common mistake is trying to stretch one across the other two’s terrain.
Its territorial scope is typically domestic: the network, care coordination and treatment live in Hungary. What it still gives internationally: fast organisation of post-return diagnostics and follow-up care, telemedicine callable from abroad (package-dependent), and the second opinion, which in many constructions runs on an international medical network.
For business trips, conferences, days-to-weeks abroad, travel insurance is the tool: emergency care, assistance, baggage and liability elements. Corporate annual frame policies cover frequent travellers without per-trip administration. Important: travel insurance is for emergencies – not planned treatment or chronic care.
For colleagues posted for months or years, neither the Hungarian package nor travel insurance suffices: international (expat) health insurance is needed, providing full care in the host country. This is bespoke territory – shaped by the host country's care system, EU entitlements (the EU card covers medically necessary state care during a temporary stay; for long-term postings, A1/S1 forms settle social-security status), and whether family accompanies.
As brokers we act in all three cover types – the point is to think the three layers through once, together, not as case-by-case firefighting. For the reverse direction, foreign employees in Hungary: foreign-colleagues article.
