What is a care coordinator – and why call them, not the insurer?

The single most practical thing to know about using group health insurance is surprisingly simple: when you need care, you do not call the insurer’s main customer service – you call the care coordinator, on a dedicated line. This article explains who they are and why the system works this way.

Who is the care coordinator?

Insurers typically outsource healthcare organisation to a specialised partner. On the Hungarian market, several insurers use the same large coordinator with dedicated lines per insurer; others coordinate in-house or with different partners. The point: the coordinator knows the clinic network, sees available slots, and verifies your cover.

What do they handle for you?

Why is this better than the main line?

The insurer’s central customer service exists for policy matters: contracts, premiums, data changes. The health line, by contrast, specialises in care – faster, more competent, no being passed around. Our advice to companies: at the employee briefing, print the coordinator’s number in the largest font, and get it into phones on day one.

Where to find the numbers

On our Resources page we list each insurer's care coordinator and dedicated lines – our clients also receive them in the employee briefing pack. And if a case gets stuck or disputed, that is where we step in: as your broker, we help you with the correspondence with the insurer, where we can.
