„But we have an occupational physician" – a frequent response when company health insurance comes up. Behind it lies a misunderstanding: the two systems serve different purposes and complement rather than replace each other.
Occupational health exists to assess fitness for work and manage workplace risks. The physician examines fitness, not illness: colleagues with back pain, hypertension or complaints needing investigation must be referred onward – typically into the public system and its waiting lists.
Group health insurance begins exactly where occupational health ends: at investigating and treating actual complaints. Specialists, labs, diagnostics, screening – without waiting lists. Together they close the loop: occupational health flags that „something should be checked", and the insurance gets it checked within days.
The occupational health fee is a mandatory cost – unavoidable. Health insurance is voluntary but favourably taxed (33.04%) and pays back through sick days. The two do not compete for the same forint: one is compliance, the other is return. More on the business case: sick-days article.
